Are liquor stores open on Christmas in Texas?
Christmas is the closure most likely to catch you twice — the statute can shut package stores for two consecutive days.
Christmas Day dates and closures
December 25. When it falls on a Sunday, package stores are also closed the following Monday.
| Year | Date | Package stores |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Friday, December 25, 2026 | Closed |
| 2027 | Saturday, December 25, 2027 | Closed |
| 2028 | Monday, December 25, 2028 | Closed |
| 2029 | Tuesday, December 25, 2029 | Closed |
What is still open on Christmas Day
The closure applies to package stores only — the shops selling sealed spirits. Everything else runs on its normal schedule:
- Grocery and convenience stores sell beer and wine on normal hours, 7:00 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday.
- Bars and restaurants serve beer, wine, and mixed drinks normally, including spirits — the closure does not touch on-premise service.
- Wineries and breweries keep their own hours under § 105.08 and § 105.082.
So a bottle of wine for the table is straightforward. A bottle of bourbon is not — that is the one purchase to make the day before.
Christmas Eve: open, normal hours
Christmas Eve is not a closure day in Texas. Package stores open 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. as on any other weekday. The only exception is a Christmas Eve that lands on a Sunday, when the ordinary Sunday closure applies instead — not because of the holiday.
It is the busiest day of the year for Texas package stores, and the most common planning mistake is assuming it is closed and buying nothing, then discovering Christmas Day genuinely is.
Buying for the holiday week
In a year where Christmas falls midweek, the only closed day is Christmas itself. In a year where it falls on a Sunday, the closure runs Sunday and Monday, and the last chance to buy spirits is Saturday at 9:00 p.m. — worth noting when the holiday and New Year’s both fall the same way in the same season.
